At Amritam Gamaya AADI Multispeciality & ENT Care, we believe in bridging the best of modern medicine and ancient wisdom to improve health and wellbeing. Today, we are excited to share our ongoing research into the effectiveness of the Kantha Jyoti Meditation Technique (KMT) in managing hypothyroidism — a common thyroid disorder affecting millions worldwide.
Understanding Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland produces insufficient thyroid hormones, causing symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and mood changes. Standard medical treatment primarily involves hormone replacement therapy to normalize thyroid hormone levels. However, many patients continue to experience symptoms, partly because stress and emotional factors can worsen thyroid function.
This is where mindfulness and meditation come into play.
What Is Kantha Jyoti Meditation Technique (KMT)?
Kantha Jyoti Meditation is a structured mindfulness intervention developed by experts in the field of Jeevan Vigyan Yoga and meditation. It combines gentle yoga postures, breathing exercises, and emotional regulation techniques designed to reduce stress and restore balance to the body’s systems.
At AADI, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Deepak Regmi and Dr. Arati Regmi, along with a multidisciplinary team, we are conducting a randomized controlled trial to scientifically evaluate how KMT impacts thyroid function and overall wellbeing in hypothyroid patients.
The Research Study
Our study involves adult participants diagnosed with stable hypothyroidism. They are randomly assigned to two groups:
• The intervention group practices KMT daily for 90 minutes over 108 days via Zoom, alongside their regular medical treatment.
• The control group continues with standard care only.
We are measuring the effects on:
• Thyroid hormone levels (TSH, T3, T4) — to see if KMT helps normalize thyroid function.
• Stress levels using the DASS-21 questionnaire.
• Quality of life assessed with the SF-36 survey.
In addition to these quantitative measures, we are conducting in-depth interviews to understand participants’ experiences, challenges, and what helps them engage with the meditation practice.
Why This Study Matters
Stress is known to influence hormone levels and immune responses, both critical in thyroid health. By reducing stress and promoting emotional balance, KMT may help ease symptoms that hormone therapy alone does not fully address.
If effective, this meditation technique could be a scalable, low-cost, and accessible complementary therapy — especially valuable for patients in remote or underserved areas who might struggle to access frequent medical care.
Integrating Spirituality and Science
This trial exemplifies how spirituality and medical science can work hand in hand. It honors traditional wisdom through meditation while applying rigorous scientific methods to validate its benefits.
